Iron Ore

Iron ore sourcing intelligence focused on fines, lump and concentrates, Fe and impurity specifications, bulk vessels, assay and index-linked contracts.

Executive overview

Iron ore is a feedstock for ironmaking, traded in forms such as fines, lump and concentrates. Commercial value depends on measurable characteristics including iron content, moisture, gangue and impurities, sizing and processing behavior. A benchmark label does not replace a cargo specification or contract formula.

Australia and Brazil are major seaborne origins, and China is a significant steelmaking market. These geographic facts provide market context, not proof of a particular supplier, cargo, price or capacity. Buyers should confirm producer authority, title, origin, quality evidence, loading point and shipment history for the proposed transaction.

9Delves helps institutional principals define an iron-ore mandate, qualify counterparties and coordinate documentation and logistics review. We distinguish published market references and common commercial practice from transaction-specific evidence.

Industries served

  • Integrated steelmakers
  • Sinter and pelletizing plants
  • Ironmaking facilities
  • Commodity trading houses
  • Bulk-materials logistics operators

Typical origins

Australia, Brazil and other producing regions; proposed origin, loading point, authority and quality require transaction-specific evidence.

Supply capabilities

A workable mandate records product form, minimum iron content, moisture range, impurities, particle-size requirements, quantity, shipment window, destination, inspection method and price quotation basis. The commonly referenced 62% Fe benchmark is a pricing reference used in parts of the seaborne market; it is not a universal grade or a substitute for the agreed specification.

Before advancing, principals should reconcile assay or certificate data with lot identity, loading records, independent inspection, vessel and terminal information, title, sanctions screening and seller authority. Indexes such as Platts IODEX may inform a pricing mechanism, but the applicable formula, quality adjustments and quotation period belong in the contract.

International logistics

Seaborne iron ore commonly requires bulk-vessel planning, terminal nomination, draft and laycan review, sampling, moisture management, loading documentation, insurance and discharge arrangements. Contract parties should define the Incoterms® 2020 rule, named place, inspection, demurrage, claims and inland movement. Port and import requirements are jurisdiction-specific.

Trade finance compatibility

Payment terms may include documentary credit, open account, advance payment or another agreed structure subject to bank approval and compliance. A credit incorporating UCP 600 is document-based; it does not independently verify cargo, title, quality or sanctions status. No financing availability is represented.

Our due diligence process

9Delves begins with a precise mandate and counterparty map. We verify corporate identity, authority, beneficial ownership, operating claims, documentation, and relevant shipment history. Product specifications and inspection requirements are defined before commercial discussions advance. We then align logistics, compliance, payment terms, and responsibilities so that each party understands the next decision. Findings are recorded clearly; unresolved questions remain visible rather than being treated as assumptions.

Our role is advisory and coordinative. We do not represent unverified supply, guarantee a transaction, or replace legal, sanctions, tax, or technical advisers. We help principals make better-informed decisions and maintain a professional process across borders.
